Hardwood vs. Tolex covered pine.
 "Old
World" craftsmanship featuring 1/2" half-blind
dovetail joints.
Why shouldn't your cab be built as well
as your guitar?
-
How many older cabs have you seen, where
the tolex is nicked, ripped and even pieces torn
off?
-
How about, where the seams, that once
were very tight, have opened up and even begun to curl?
-
Then there's the fact that the glue,
which is heat sensitive, has let go at the top from
the heat.
You will have none
of these problems with a finished hardwood cab.

Consider this perspective:
-
Covering a cabinet with Tolex dampens the resonation
(Vibration). What do you think an
acoustic guitar would sound like swathed in vinyl?
-
What lies below the finish is the same as
the surface. Severe scratches and gouges could be sanded out
and the finish restored to the effected area. Can
you do that with tolex?
-
Hardwood is more durable than tolex. Do
you think that a piece of hardwood might be a little more
resistant to scratches, gouges, nicks and tears than a piece
of plastic material? You'll
never tear off a piece of the hardwood!
-
Over time tolex shrinks, especially when
subjected to heat. This is what opens up the seams. This
cannot happen with a hardwood cab.
-
Beside all of these other benefits, you
can express your individuality and have a cab that doesn't
look like 'all the rest'. Your cab can
look as good as it sounds!
